Florence Avenue Interchange

Florence Avenue Bridge Lane Reduction at I-5

Overview:

The Florence Avenue Bridge over I-5 is being reconstructed, one half at a time, to accommodate the I-5 freeway widening. As of Nov. 28, 2017, crews have moved into the next stage of construction on the Florence Avenue bridge (Stage 2 Phase 1). Traffic has been shifted onto the newly constructed south half of the Florence Avenue bridge and the new lane configuration includes two lanes for westbound traffic and one lane for eastbound traffic. The new temporary traffic configuration on Florence Avenue for Stage 2 Phase 1 is shown on the map below; closure areas are shown in red.

The Florence Avenue on-ramp to northbound I-5, in the city of Santa Fe Springs, will also be closed for the duration of this work.

As part of Stage 2 Phase 1, crews have also begun reconstructing the intersection of Orr and Day Road at Florence Avenue, to accommodate the new higher elevation of the Florence Avenue bridge. Please note, the intersection of Orr and Day Road, from Longworth Avenue to Florence Avenue, has been closed for approximately two months (weather permitting), as of Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2017. While the intersection is closed, motorists will be directed to use an alternate route, as shown on the map below.

Finally, during Stage 2 Phase 1 construction, there is a temporary pedestrian route along the south side of Florence Avenue. Pedestrians can follow the route outlined in green on the map below. To explore the pedestrian route, click on the map below.

Improvements:

The Florence Avenue bridge will be widened from the existing four lanes to six lanes. In addition to being wider, the new bridge will also be approximately nearly 3 feet higher and 321 feet longer. Finally, pedestrian access is being improved and on- and off-ramps are being reconstructed and realigned to accommodate the I-5 freeway widening.

How Is This Going to Affect Me?

Heavy traffic and delays in the area are anticipated. Use alternate routes whenever possible. There are three main alternative routes for Florence Avenue, for northbound, eastbound and westbound traffic, as shown on the maps below.

Project Overview

The Santa Ana Freeway (Interstate 5) Florence Avenue Interchange Project will widen I-5 to add one High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) or carpool lane, and one general purpose lane in each direction. The project extends through the cities of Downey and Santa Fe Springs to just north of the San Gabriel River Freeway (Interstate 605) bridge.

The freeway improvements include widening structures at Florence Avenue and Orr and Day Road, shoulder widening, median barriers, new on-ramp and off-ramp designs, and reconfiguring the Florence Avenue interchange at the I-5. The Florence Avenue overcrossing will be widened from four lanes to six lanes.
