Florence Avenue Interchange

Improvements:

The Florence Avenue Bridge will be widened from the existing four lanes to six lanes. The new bridge will also be approximately three feet higher and 321 feet longer. Finally, pedestrian access will be improved and on and off-ramps are being reconstructed and realigned to accommodate the I-5 freeway widening.

This project is 75% complete.

Construction of the first half of the Florence Ave. Bridge is complete.

Construction of the second half of the Florence Avenue Bridge has been moved to the final phase of construction with a projected completion date of early 2020. On August 3, 2018, the first half of the bridge was modified to allow to lanes of traffic flow in each direction between Orr & Day Rd. and Studebaker Rd. Additionally, two left-turn lanes were added to westbound Florence Ave. at Studebaker Rd. One left-turn lane was added to eastbound Florence Ave. at Studebaker Rd. to accommodate traffic turning into Giant RV. There was an immediate improvement in traffic flow. Photos below:

Construction of the sound wall along the Florence Ave. on ramp to northbound I-5 is complete. This provides a final sound barrier to the residents along Longworth Ave. Photos below:

Reconstruction of the Orr & Day Rd. interchange on the north side of Florence Ave. is complete. Photos below:

Support columns for the second half of the Florence Ave. Bridge have been constructed. Photo below:

The pedestrian walkway on the south side of the Florence Ave. and over the bridge is complete and open. Photos below:

Project Overview

The Santa Ana Freeway (Interstate 5) Florence Avenue Interchange Project will widen I-5 to add one High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) or carpool lane, and one general purpose lane in each direction. The project extends through the cities of Downey and Santa Fe Springs to just north of the San Gabriel River Freeway (Interstate 605) bridge.

The freeway improvements include widening structures at Florence Avenue and Orr and Day Road, shoulder widening, median barriers, new on-ramp and off-ramp designs, and reconfiguring the Florence Avenue interchange at the I-5. The Florence Avenue overcrossing will be widened from four lanes to six lanes.
